Who are the ICU Liberty Singers?

The ICU Liberty Singers started up in November 2020. Originally planned as a short series of four online rehearsals and a recording, the choir has taken off in a way that wasn’t fully expected, with well over 100 recipients and a single release!

Membership is open to all critical care workers who would like to benefit from singing together whilst apart.

Where do we meet

We meet fortnightly to rehearse together via zoom. On Wednesdays 8.00 – 9.00pm.

Time lags on internet communication mean that singers have to remain muted during rehearsals. We can see and hear Kari as she teaches us new songs and chat to the group via the chat box. At break time we can  unmute and mingle in the break out rooms for an opportunity for a catch up with our choir buddies.

What if I can’t make a rehearsal?

Zoom meetings are recorded and shared via the ICU Liberty Singers membership section on this website, so you can catch up in your own time.

But how can we perform?

We can’t gather in a room together and sing to a live audience (and given the geographic spread of our members, that would involve a long drive / flight for some!) but we can create a virtual performance with our recordings. For each song that we record, Kari provides (colour-coded) conducting videos for singers to follow as they record themselves. Since restrictions have been lifted we have ben able to meet up a couple of times a year – a little bit of rehearsing and sometimes a performance! We performed in 2022 at the SOA in Belfast, The PICU conference in Leicester and the Welsh Intensive Care Society Summer Meeting. We also performed alongside the Liberty Belles in Nottingham. In 2023 we will be performing again at the SOA in Birmingham and the BACCN Conference in Nottingham.

How much does it cost?

Its £10 for a monthly subscription. This includes a fortnightly rehearsal via zoom and access to rehearsal recordings. This also includes participation in virtual recordings and any in-person meet-ups.

That’s great – sign me up.

We ask for your email address as part of the sign up process, you will be asked to choose a username and password as well. You won’t need to log in to access the live teaching (that’s all delivered via zoom), but you may need to know your login to access the zoom recordings, if you need to catch up.
